The capital of Turkmenistan will host another major international competition-the world weightlifting championship, which will be held in 2018 at the modern sports base of the Olympic town. This decision was taken today by the Executive Committee of the International weightlifting Federation (IWF).
Initially, the 2018 world Cup was to be held in the capital of Peru – Lima. However, in November, the country refused to host the tournament due to the unavailability of the sports center in San Isidro to the competition and agreed to transfer the right of the organization to another country.
Given these circumstances, as well as” taking into account the request of Ashgabat to use the legacy of the V Asian indoor and martial arts games held with success in September this year, the Executive Council of the International weightlifting Federation unanimously supported the proposal to transfer the 2018 world champion to Turkmenistan, ” the IWF website says.
The press service of the international weightlifting Federation also emphasizes that “athletes participating in the 2018 world Cup will compete in Ashgabat in excellent conditions at modern sports facilities that are built for the V Asian indoor and martial arts games.”
Recall, weightlifting was part of the program of the V Asian indoor and martial arts games, during which the Olympic champion of Rio 2016, Sohrab moradi from Iran broke the world record in the amount of double-event, which lasted 18 years in the weight category up to 94 kg.
The 2018 world Cup in Ashgabat, will be held from 24 November to 3 December.
